Supporting Aboriginal Businesses: Why It Matters and How You Can Be an Ally

In recent years, there’s been growing recognition of the importance of supporting Aboriginal-owned businesses. However, the conversation needs to go deeper than just purchasing from these businesses—it’s about acknowledging the cultural significance behind the products and respecting the stories and traditions that come with them. For Aboriginal entrepreneurs like me, Brodie George, founder of Jalayimiya Swim, our businesses are not just commercial ventures. They are cultural expressions, pathways to economic independence, and powerful tools for self-determination.

🌿 The Significance of Buying from Aboriginal-Owned Businesses
Aboriginal businesses are deeply connected to the heritage and lived experiences of their founders. When you buy from these businesses, you’re supporting more than just a product—you’re embracing a piece of history, a tradition, and an ongoing story of resilience and creativity.

Statistics show that Aboriginal businesses are growing at a rapid pace, with over 17,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses currently operating across Australia. These businesses are critical for the economic development of Indigenous communities, creating job opportunities and reducing unemployment. They are 100 times more likely to employ Indigenous Australians than non-Indigenous businesses, which is a powerful way to uplift communities that have historically been marginalised.

But beyond the numbers, supporting Aboriginal businesses fosters cultural pride. For brands like Jalayimiya Swim, every product is a reflection of cultural heritage, carefully designed and crafted to celebrate our connection to Country and community.

Aboriginal-Owned Brands Versus Cultural Appropriation
Unfortunately, many non-Aboriginal brands have taken Indigenous-inspired designs and profited from them without understanding or respecting their origins. This cultural appropriation diminishes the sacred traditions behind these designs, reducing them to aesthetic trends.

As the founder of Jalayimiya Swim, I’ve experienced this first-hand. My designs come from my Walmajarri heritage, inspired by the vibrant desert art I grew up with in Fitzroy Crossing, in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Every brushstroke is tied to my story, my family, and my cultural knowledge. But all too often, non-Aboriginal brands romanticise these designs, stripping away their significance and using them as mere decoration.

🌸 Why Authenticity Matters
When non-Aboriginal brands profit from Indigenous art without permission or understanding, it takes up space that should belong to Aboriginal businesses—those who are genuinely connected to the culture and the stories they are sharing. Authenticity is key. Aboriginal art isn’t just a fashion statement or a trend; it is a living connection to our ancestors, our knowledge systems, and our history.

That’s why it’s so important to leave space for Aboriginal voices. Non-Aboriginal brands should be stepping back, collaborating with Aboriginal artists, or uplifting the voices of Indigenous entrepreneurs, rather than capitalising on our heritage. When you buy from 100% Aboriginal-owned businesses, you are helping to ensure that our culture is represented in a way that is true to us, by us.

🌿 The Role of Non-Aboriginal Allies
To all of our non-Aboriginal allies who have supported Jalayimiya Swim and other Indigenous businesses, we want to say a huge thank you. Your support is more than just a purchase—it’s a powerful act of allyship. By taking the time to do your research and choose authentic, Aboriginal-owned brands, you’re helping to challenge cultural appropriation and ensuring that Indigenous culture is respected and celebrated.

Together, we can shift the narrative away from cultural appropriation towards cultural celebration. Non-Aboriginal allies play a crucial role in this process by helping to uplift Aboriginal voices and respecting the deep cultural connection behind the products they purchase.

When you wear Jalayimiya Swim, you’re wearing more than just swimwear. You’re wearing the stories of my people, the connection to Country, and the pride of our Aboriginal community. We couldn’t be more grateful for your continued support.
